From the time you step foot in Kigali, Rwanda and see the clean streets and the laughing faces of children and adults, it is hard at first to imagine the terror that engulfed this pleasant land eighteen years ago.  The genocide against the Tutsis, instigated during one hundred days in 1994 by extreme Hutu nationalists in the capital of Kigali, spread throughout the country with staggering speed and brutality.  Ordinary citizens were incited by local officials and the Hutu Power government to take up arms against their neighbors. War and genocide left Rwanda in ruins, with one million dead and two million in exile.

In the 90's, the church in Rwanda lost its moral authority.  Many church leaders were implicated in the genocide, and victims died in the very churches where they had sheltered expecting safety. Since then, churches have played a major role in the reconciliation process, and their reputation is gradually recovering.

The restoration of this nation can be seen no clearer than in the next generation. Youth in Rwanda constitutes 40% of the resident population. Over 50% of the Rwandan population is under 20 years old, and the median age of the population is 22.7. While the genocide in 1994 destroyed the economy, the government and the family, the future of this nation sits at the feet of its emerging leaders.

At Global Advance, we are working to train and equip this next generation of indigenous leaders for the Great Commission. In November, we sent a team of pastors and business leaders to coach and train young leaders in both ministry and business. Our training team met with pastors to help lay the foundations for a mentoring movement for young leaders. They met with future millennial church leaders to help introduce biblical leadership principles, and with future millennial entrepreneurs on business principles.  The hope was that as young men and women launch businesses and ministries, these principles will help lift the moral capital in the church and marketplace.

Because hope and transformation come from the gospel of Jesus Christ, churches are the foundation of community health, reconciliation, and healing. The marketplace that has been influenced by strong Godly leadership who leverage kingdom principals, in partnership with the local church, is a one-two punch.  Working to train and equip the next generation will secure the health and future of the church in Rwanda. Colossians 1:28-29 ‘We proclaim him, admonishing and teaching everyone with all wisdom, so that we may present everyone perfect in Christ.’

Thank you for partnering with Global Advance to lay foundations that will re-make this nation. In 2018, we will be continuing our work in Rwanda, and your gift today can help us to expand our work with this emerging movement of NextGen leaders.
